Disney has announced that sequels to some of the company’s biggest hits will be made

The famous American entertainment multinational has recently announced its intention to create i sequel of some animated films that in the past have enjoyed great success: in particular, the program includes the production of Toy Story 5, Frozen 3 e Zootropolis 2. “Today, I’m pleased to announce that we have sequels to our most popular animated franchises in the works: Toy Story, Frozen e Zootropolis. We’ll be sharing more on these productions very soon, but it’s just one example of how we’re investing in our unrivaled brands and franchises.” commented Bob IgerCEO of the company.
The announcement came in conjunction with the release of financial data for the last quarter of 2022. According to the data, Disney Pixar and Disney Animation are having a tough timecharacterized both by the loss of subscribers to the Disney+ streaming service (precisely more than two million subscribers, the first major drop in the history of the platform) and by the low profit received at the box office by the latest animated films released (Strange Worldfor example, grossed just $74 million).
In the last period Disney is at a loss. Could sequels to these beloved franchises be an opportunity to catch up?
In the last few years Disney has released notable works, however: for example Red (2022) received a nomination for the next Oscar (to be held in March), while Charmthe 2021 classic that grossed more than $250 million, just landed three awards at the 2023 Grammy Awards, including awards for Best Original Score and Best Song. However, the latest Disney productions cannot be compared with the global successes of the past. Frozen 2with $1.5 billion at the box office, is considered Disney’s last big hit before the pandemic. Toy Story 4, the fourth installment of the hugely popular franchise, grossed one billion dollars in 2019. Same result for the 2016 film Zootropoliswhich achieved global success.
Nevertheless, it is possible that the company could recover supporters and fame thanks to the new projects in the pipeline: the cute animals of Zootropolis have fascinated young and old, the mythical adventures of Frozen have been hoarding prizes while Toy Story is perhaps one of the most popular franchises ever released by Disney. At this point, we can only say one thing: we are very curious to see the sequels.
