The hit series may conclude with the currently airing fifth season. Here because.
The news that no one would have expected: Yellowstonethe most watched series on American TV, could end in a few weeks, with the fifth season. Deadline learned that the co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridanthe Paramount Network and the Paramount Global studio are moving to end the series in its current form, mainly due to seemingly insurmountable issues involving the protagonist Kevin Costner. Meanwhile, they are planning a potential expansion of the franchise with a new series – again centered on the Dutton family – of which the Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) would be in talks for the lead role.
What’s going on behind the scenes in Yellowstone?
Sources told the site that Costner, who was recently awarded a Golden Globe for his role in Yellowstonedisagrees with the production on the work schedule, with the actor who would like to limit his commitments to just one week of filming for the remaining eight episodes of the fifth season, while he is busy as a director and performer on the set of his massive film four-part western Horizon, which he wrote with Jon Baird. Costner’s tight shooting schedule, even in the past, has been a source of frustration for Sheridan and is reportedly causing bad feelings among many of her co-stars, including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille e Gil Birmingham.
Sources say Paramount Network turned down Costner’s most recent offer and made the decision to move forward without him in another series — initially airing on the network and then only available on the Paramount+ streaming service. It is currently unclear whether the rest of the cast of Yellowstone he will be part of it, together with McConaughey, but everything seems to indicate yes. It’s also unclear whether the spin-off will be set on the Duttons’ ranch in Montana or elsewhere. Reached for comment, Paramount Network said through a spokesperson that “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of Yellowstone and we hope it will be like this for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we continue to work on expansions of the incredible world she built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent that we would love to collaborate with.”
