Five streaming movies that refer to steampunk
- Wild Wild West
- Lemony Snicket – A Series of Unfortunate Events
- Hellboy
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Sherlock Holmes
Wild Wild West (1999)
The western/sci-fi sideshow directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and interpreted by the trio composed by Will Smith, Kevin Kline e Salma Hayek it still represents the most explicit attempt to make steampunk cinema today. The result is unbalanced, but that doesn’t mean that Wild Wild West at times it is not seriously entertaining, since it is a wild and hypertrophic sideshow. Then Kenneth Branagh as a mechanized villain is a lot of fun. We don’t know whether to advise you to see it, but if you do it it certainly doesn’t hurt…Available on Rakuten TV, CHILI, Google Play, Apple Itunes, Amazon Prime Video.
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)
The melancholic and very elegant film by Brad Silberling echoes steampunk in the setting and in some moments of excellent cinema. A Jim Carrey in great shape and a rock solid supporting cast – including Meryl Streep! – make of Lemony Snicket – A Series of Unfortunate Events a feature film with its own powerful appeal, visually accurate, full of moments of excellent cinema. Also introspective. Very underrated in our opinion. Available on Rakuten TV, CHILI, Google Play, Apple Itunes, Amazon Prime Video.
Hellboy (2004)
The visionary genius of Guillermo del Toro elaborates the comic-book of Mike Mignola inserting it by right in the great fantastic frescoes of our time. A Ron Perlman rocky and driven is the huge protagonist of Hellboy, hilarious infernal action built on magnificent sets and an untouchable film universe. The second chapter is also more majestic on an aesthetic level, but we prefer the original for its more raw and uncontrolled expressive power. A hoot. Available on Rakuten TV, CHILI, Google Play, Apple Itunes, Amazon Prime Video.
Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)
The masterpiece of Hayao Miyazaki is a steampunk reinterpretation with a very sweet soul and complex, deep characters, which it is impossible not to fall in love with. For us Howl’s Moving Castle is the true masterpiece of the great Japanese author, a condensed film of the highest quality with a heart that beats very fast. Moments that melt the heart, that make you love animation even in adulthood. It was nominated for an Oscar for best animated film, he deserved the statuette. Available on Apple Itunes, Netflix.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
The adaptation of Guy Ritchie it probably has the real steampunk soul, as it offers not only precise references but also a certain type of atmosphere of the genre, “dirty” but extremely vital. Robert Downey Jr. e Jude Law dive into this reboot of Sherlock Holmes with a contagious desire to have fun, making it a reckless and compelling film. The sequel wobbles more, but all in all these are two very enjoyable films to enjoy. Popcorn movies with a Gascon spirit that never hurts. Available on Rakuten TV, CHILI, Google Play, Apple Itunes, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video.
