With 11 nominations for the Oscars 2023, Everything Everywhere All at Once reappears in Italian cinemas, as a second chance for a curious film. But elsewhere it has been a success, do we have time to recover?
There is a movie that has as many as 11 Oscar nominations 2023is Everything Everywhere All at Once. That movie comes out in cinema Italians the February 2nd, after the nominations, waiting for the Oscars delivery ceremony on March 13th. All normal? Not entirely: in fact the film by Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (the “Daniels”), played by Michelle Yeoh and springboard re-launch of Ke Huy Quan, had already been released in Italy in the autumn, but hardly anyone had noticed it except the cinephiles. It’s a second chance for a curious film, a great success in the USA.

Everything Everywhere All at Once tries again at the Italian box office, after the surprise in the USA
Everything Everywhere All at Oncedespite his play on the idea of the multiverse winks at cinecomic blockbusters, in fact it is not: sponsored by the independent American distributor A24it’s a feature film “indie” to all intents and purposes, cost no more than 25 million dollars. Which are not very few, but they are the bare minimum to be able to involve actresses of the caliber of Michelle Yeoh e Jamie Lee Curtis. In the world, however, it has collected 105,220,000 dollars, of which 71 in the States alone, more than recovering its budget in the United States alone. Ultimately, beyond the unexpected shower of nominations at theOscar 2023 (and of the two Golden Globe to Yeoh and Quan), was also a concrete public success.
It is curious to note how, however, his international release has not attracted the same American interest: according to data from Boxofficemojo, the film has exceeded 4 million dollars only in England and Australia, with 3 million in South Korea (and a missed release in China, which could prove to be a successful idea , if there is room for another American production, in their closed market for foreign titles). In Italia it hadn’t gone better: yes, because Everything Everywhere All at Once has arrived in theaters on October 6, 2022 and, despite the confidence shown (and now renewed) in the title by the distribution I Wonder Picturesthe feature film settled for us at 552,000 euros (source Cinetel, press conference on the 2022 market).
Is the film difficult to frame? Does the cast not recognize each other right away? The title is one tongue twister for non-anglophone countries? Or is it simply an independent work that needed the magic word “Oscar” per really get noticed in the mass market?
We’re about to find out.
