The Syndicate of Italian Film Journalists appoints Sergio Leone – The Italian who invented America the best documentary of the year. Here are the possible finalists in the documentary categories.
The Documentary of the Year of the 2023 edition of the Nastri D’Argento is Sergio Leone – The Italian who invented America Of Francis Zippel. This was announced by the Board of Italian Film Journalists, which will recognize the director immediately after the Berlin Film Festival, which will take place from 16 to 26 February. On the same occasion, the SNGCI will award the prizes to the best documentaries dedicated to the story of Cinema of the Real and titles on Cinema, Entertainment, Culture.

The Silver Ribbon for Documentary of the Year 2023 is a trophy that rewards the excellence and particular quality of a “special” film, in our case a documentary. Last year the honor fell to Enniusthe movie of Giuseppe Tornatore are Ennio Morricone.
The Union has chosen Sergio Leone – The Italian who invented Americaas can be read in the motivation, for “the originality and emotion that one breathes right from the first shot of the film, renewing with affection and great care the homage to a Master never celebrated enough with an unprecedented cut, full of the most prestigious international testimonies. A story that enhances the value of Sergio Leone’s innovative gaze and unique creativity, a man born in cinema who has made sequences, protagonists, music and images immortal from his cinema”.
Written by himself Francis Zippel and presented in competition in the Venezia Classici section at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, Sergio Leone – The Italian who invented America is a Sky Studios and Sky Italia production with Leone Film Group. The Silver Ribbon for Documentary of the Year is similar to the Silver Ribbon for Film of the Year, which will go to The strangenessdirected by Roberto went and played by Tony Servillo, Ficarra e Picone.
The documentaries that aspire to the Nastri D’Argento 2023
With the documentary dedicated to Sergio Leonethere are 55 titles – as always divided into sections dedicated to Cinema of the Real and to films that tell the protagonists and events of Cinema, Entertainment, Culture – chosen from among the 130 documentaries of 2022 proposed in the most important festivals, in specialized reviews and also on television networks or platforms.
To note, a particular attention to the 70s, a particularly intense decade both from a cultural and political point of view. Do not miss the five young documentary filmmakers who aspire to the Prize which recalls, together with the Experimental Center of Cinematography, Valentina Pediciniwho disappeared two years ago.
A big news is a category dedicated to football and its most beloved protagonists: Robert Mancini, Gianluca Vialli, Paolo Rossi, Riv’s Teeth, Kobe Bryant.
