During an interview Russell T. Davies spoke about the upcoming season of Doctor Who and his big and long-awaited return to the franchise. Not only that, the showrunner explained that introducing a spin-off TV series has been a longtime goal of hers. Looking at the entertainment landscape, there is certainly no shortage of stories born of successful projects. Particularly, Davies references Star Trek offerings on Paramount+ with extreme envy, e would like something like this for Doctor Who.
While so far there hasn’t been a budget needed to make it happen, things have changed with the partnership of Disney:
“I thought – without any criticism of the people who were running the show at the time, because they were doing it according to BBC measures – that it was time for the next phase of Doctor Who. I thought the streaming platforms were ready spin-offs are ready; I always believed in spin-offs when I was there”he revealed Davies. “I did Torchwood as a spinoff, and The Sarah Jane Adventures did too. Those spinoffs went into decline when I left, and I can see why. And I left after 2008, when the money became even more less. Now I think it’s fair enough that the money is spent on other things”.
The 14th and 15th Doctors will return in November 2023 for at least three episodes – for the show’s 60th anniversary, of which a new teaser was released.
