ATTENTION!!! ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS ABOUT TEEN WOLF: THE MOVIE
The herd of Teen Wolf headed by Scott McCall is back, but with the absence of a key character: Stiles Stilinski. The protagonist’s best friend was a much loved member of his group, and it was disappointing when it was revealed that he would not be participating in the reunion project. That said, it wasn’t for lack of trying, as show creator Jeff Davis revealed more information about the conversations that occurred in an attempt to bring the character back to life. Teen Wolf: The Movie.
Why didn’t Dylan O’Brien return for the sequel?
In a new interview with TV Insider ahead of the film’s release on the Paramount+ platform, Jeff Davis revealed that there was a point in the project’s development where the beloved character of Dylan O’Brien, Stileswould have been involved.
That said, after some discussion, they decided it was best for everyone though O’Brien had not participated, given the circumstances:
“We had written ideas, but nothing that ever made it past the draft stage. There was a moment where she said, “Okay, maybe I’ll make a cameo.” Then another moment where she said, “Maybe I’ll do a few days of shooting.” But at a certain point in the process I said: either we let him participate or we don’t. And I think he made the right decision for himself. He must do what feeds him creatively. He did that character for six seasons. I told him on the phone: “The worst thing that can happen is for the audience to see you on the screen and understand that you don’t want to be there.” So you have to want to be there, whether we want to or not.” And he chose to leave the character where it was”.
The film is missing several characters, but the absence of Stiles it is probably the largest. At the end of the MTV show, the boy joined the FBI in the hope of becoming a detective. In the Paramount+ film, the sheriff Stilinski offers a brief explanation as to why his son cannot be involved.
According to him, the organization keeps him busy with their cases. Apart from this, Davis and his collaborators made sure that Stiles still play a role. First, with a direct reference through the appearance of his Jeep. Secondly, through her history with Lydia. In one of the film’s major twists, the Banshee confesses that she left him due to a recurring nightmare about her death.
Actually, O’Brien he declined because he didn’t feel comfortable participating in a project he felt was rushed. He didn’t go into the specifics of the discussions, but the revelation of Davis it shows that the decision was not taken lightly. In fact, both sides tried to make it work, but sadly failed. In all this, however, the actor has not completely closed the door to the possibility of resuming the role of the character in the future. He remains good friends with many of the supernatural series cast members, including Tyler Posey. So, the chances of seeing it again in another project by Teen Wolf they are good.
In addition to the anxiety of O’Brien in the universe of Teen Wolfthe revelation of Lydia it could also be the starting point for another sequel. Jeff Davis has previously revealed that there have been discussions of making more films as part of the franchise’s expansion to Paramount+. At that point, hopefully the actor will finally be able to return as Stiles.
