Unveiled the full program of SEEYOUSOUND International Music Film Festival 2023, which will be held in Turin, at the Cinema Massimo, from 24 February to 2 March. The ninth edition will offer the public 79 films including feature films, documentaries, shorts and video clips, of which 5 absolute premieres, 2 European premieres and 26 Italian premieres, welcoming in Turin over 60 guests from Italy and the world who will immerse themselves with the public in the shared atmosphere of the festival, which this year returns to full possession of its live dimension with 22 concerts, soundtracks and DJ sets in 7 different locations in the city.
The headquarters of the event will be the halls of the Cinema Massimo, where the spectator will be able to explore music in its various facets and contaminations, with films that celebrate great stars and universally known genres collected in the non-competitive section Into the Groove – such as those on Sinéad O’ Connor and King Crimson the New York rock scene of the early 2000s which saw the birth of bands such as The Strokes and Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and TV on the Radio, LCD Soundsystem and Liars, and the Italian folk with roots at the Folk Club of Turin – or finding titles that show the political, social and community power of music – a peculiarity of the Rising Sound – Music is the weapon review which this year brings to SYS the film about Cape Verdean Cesária Évora, or the one about James Brown and his legendary concert that after the assassination of Martin Luther King kept the riots in Boston at bay.
This edition’s tribute will be to Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov (dissident exiled since last March) with 2 titles in his filmography that have a link with music: Tchaikovsky’s Wife – on the Russian composer’s tumultuous relationship with his wife Antonina Miliukova – presented last year in Cannes, the 9th edition of SYS opens in Italian preview on Friday 24 February; and Summer (Leto), dedicated to the rock singer Viktor Tsoï, leader of the 80s Russian rock band Kino.
The Long Play Feature and Long Play Doc competitions show a selection of 10 feature films among the best and most recent internationally produced, capable of showing how much music is a necessary and natural form of expression, narrating its protagonists and trends; from Miucha, The Voice Of Bossa Nova, on the Brazilian singer queen of bossa nova, to Zillion, the (true) story of Frank Verstraeten, entrepreneur-criminal who opened the homonymous mega-disco in 1997 (both in Italian premieres).
The 13 short films of 7Inch make up a varied program in which all genres find space alongside 6 experimental shorts out of competition. The Soundies contest in 20 tracks/clips contains the most original and incisive offerings today from the immense panorama of world video clips, and ex post music in Frequencies, a contest for musicians, producers and sound designers focused on original soundtracks.
