Toby Stephens and Lance Reddick’s pick: Rick Riordan’s commentary
In recent months, Percy Jackson fans had made themselves heard on social media by asking Logan Lermanwho portrayed Percy in the two films Percy Jackson & the Olympians – The Lightning Thief e Percy Jackson & the Olympians – Sea of Monsters, to play the role of Poseidon in the Disney+ series. But the actor quickly curbed his enthusiasm by declaring: “I don’t think I’m old enough.” Instead Stephens – who has plenty of experience with the ocean, having played Captain Flint in all four seasons of Black Sails – seemed better suited to wield the sea god’s trident.
In a post on his blog, Rick Riordan informed fans that Reddick and Stephens have been the last two actors of the series announced, because “the last major characters to appear in season one” (based on the book The Lightning Thief). “In all of his roles, Lance brings an aura of authority and power that makes him a perfect fit for the king of Olympus,” wrote Riordan. “As I told him when we met, he has so much gravity that it could cause the planets to go out of alignment, and when he makes his displeasure known to Percy Jackson… wow, wait until you see that scene.”
Of Stephens, Riordan added, “Toby is incredible on screen. When he delivered some of Poseidon’s iconic lines, I had chills. And he and Walker together are absolutely believable as father and son.” “Not many actors have the ability to stand face to face and convince you that they are the manifestations of the sky and the sea, that they are about to destroy each other. Lance and Toby absolutely have that divine aura,” concluded the author.
