Gossip Girl, that’s who – of the original cast – would be back in the reboot
The reboot of Gossip Girl it was canceled after two seasons. HBO Max has decided to pull the plug on the contemporary reimagining of the iconic late 2000s series based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s best-selling novels. Showrunner Joshua Safran has written a warm thank you message to fans of the series, hinting that the world of Gossip Girl may return to screens (again) in the future.
The ending of the second – and, at this point, last – season, broadcast on Saturday 28 January on Sky Serie, has therefore been modified so as not to leave too many questions unresolved. The episode was supposed to allude to storyline that would be explored in the third season. In light of HBO Max’s cancellation, the reboot tried to greet its audience with a conclusion that could be defined as such.
In the epilogue, the protagonists try to track down Gossip Girl using Zoya (Whitney Peak) as bait. Here Kate (Tavi Gevinson) – annoyed at the idea that Zoya is posing as New York’s most famous digital gossip – comes out to meet with producers who she believes are interested in buying the rights to her story. In reality, Kate falls into the trap of the boys and finds herself in front of Jonathan (Matt Doyle) – who is none other than Eric’s husband, or Serena’s brother -, and the presenter and producer Andy Cohen (in the part of himself same)-. Jonathan mentions to Kate that Eric (who doesn’t appear in the episode) will be handing over that news to The Spectator, Nate Archibald’s Journal.

Now that the series is officially over and the games are done, the creator of the reboot Joshua Safran has revealed which are the actors – and characters – from the original series that he planned to bring back to the screen. “We tried to have Nate in Season 2, but logistically we couldn’t make it because Chace Crawford was busy filming The Boys in Canada, while we shoot in New York,” explained Safran, illustrating the complications due to the Covid protocols. Another name is that of Connor Paolo, the actor of Eric in the original series: “Jonathan is her husband and we wish Connor was in the scene too, but when we were shooting in the museum we only had one day and Connor was busy filming a movie,Safran said.
Besides Nate and Eric, the other original series character Joshua Safran was aiming for was the iconic Bliar Waldorf interpretata da Leighton Meester. “Nate and Blair have always been on top of our thoughts. If (the reboot) had a third season I think they would have been the next ones we would have contacted, especially as we’ve tried to have Chace on set before,Safran said. Another small regret of the showrunner is not being able to have Michelle Trachtenberg – who returned in the second season as Georgina Sparks – and Azhy Robertson, the interpreter of her son Milo, on screen together. “Sadly Ahzy was on the set of Invasion in South Africa. I wish they’d share the scene,Safran said.
