Louis Garrell’s romantic comedy, The Innocent, dominates the 2023 César Awards with eleven nominations, followed by the crime thriller Night of the 12th, one of the top French box office winners of 2022.

The innocent of Louis Garrel e On the night of the 12th by Dominik Moll lead the nomination ai Caesar 2023the French equivalent of the Oscars.
Nominated for 11 Cesar, The Innocent is a heist romantic comedy starring Louis Garrel himself, Roschdy Zem and Noemie Merlant presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2022.
Follows with 10 nominations The night of the 12th, a procedural thriller by Dominik Moll starring Bastien Bouillon and Bouli Lanners in the role of two policemen trying to solve a gruesome murder.
Other major contenders for the Cesars include Cedric Klapisch’s Life is a Dance, about a dancer who, after a serious accident, seeks a future in contemporary dance, Albert Serra’s Pacifiction, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s Forever Young – Les Amandiers and Saint Omer by Alice Diop.
Juliette Binoche is in the running for Best Actress for her role in Between Two Worlds by Emmanuel Carrère, alongside Fanny Ardant for The Young Lovers by Carine Tardieu, Laure Calamy for Full Time, Virginie Efira for Revoir Paris by Alice Winocour and Adele Exarchopoulos for Rien à Foutre by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre. Missing among them is Elsa Zilberstein for her portrayal in Simone: A Journey of the Century, a biopic about Simone Veil, an Auschwitz survivor who became France’s health minister and supported the 1975 law legalizing abortion in France.
In the Best Actor category, Jean Dujardin, the Academy Award-winning actor of The Artist, is nominated for his role as a dedicated cop investigating the November 2015 Paris attacks in November. He will face Garrel with The Innocent, Vincent Macaigne with Emmanuel Mouret’s Affair, Benoit Magimel with Pacifiction and Denis Menochet with Francois Ozon’s Peter von Kant.
Interestingly, Claire Denis, a major player in 2022 for the Silver Bear won in Berlin with Both Sides of the Blade and the Grand Prix in Cannes with Stars at Noon (shared with Close by Lukas Dhont) has not received any one application. In fact, the category of best directors is entirely dominated by male directors (Moll, Garrel, Jimenez, Klapisch and Serra) while among the best films in contention there is only one title directed by a female director, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi with Forever Young – Les Amandiers.
The 2023 César Awards ceremony will be held on February 24. A Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to American director David Fincher, while Tahar Rahim will conduct the ceremony.
