The series debuts Wednesday, January 25 on Paramount+ That Dirty Black Bag, spaghetti western in horror sauce born from the imagination of the Sardinian director Mauro Aragoni and taken from the latter’s web series of the same name. The eight-episode series well represents the challenge – launched by Paramount in conjunction with the launch of its streaming service, which landed in Italy last September – to bring cinematic TV series to screens.
From Quentin Tarantino to Sergio Leone – without neglecting the master of horror John Carpenter -, in That Dirty Black Bag there are many tributes to great cinema. But there is not only quotationism; the series intercepts the contemporary sensibility of telling stories with protagonists with anti-heroic traits. There are not only good guys and bad guys: in GreenVale – the frontier outpost where the series is set – there is room for every shade of grey. And lots and lots of blood.
“I really wanted to play the role of Red Bill because it’s something I’ve never attempted before,” says Douglas Booth – the interpreter of the bounty hunter at the center of the story – who adds that one of the attractions of this project was the possibility of working with Dominic Cooper, the interpreter of McCoy to whom he also has a friendship off the set. “Why are westerns making such a strong comeback on television? I think the audience feels like taking refuge in a world that they have idealized as simpler than the times we live in today, even though in reality the wild west was really unforgiving” osserva Booth.

“My character Bronson is one who will do anything to survive. Immersing myself in this western world wasn’t difficult for me, having spent a lot of time in the countryside and in contact with nature since I was a child,” he recounted Guido Caprino, who added: “If I’m a contemporary cowboy? I tell you yes! I like this definition”.
