Jonathan Frakes, aka the legendary Star Trek Next Generation Riker, has his own opinion on the continuation of Star Trek… and is skeptical about the future of the saga in cinema.
When it comes to Star Trekeveryone stops to listen to the opinion of Jonathan Frakes: in addition to having played the legendary commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994), directed several episodes of it, as well as signing the direction of a couple of films based on the series. Frakes / Riker recently appeared in the revival of Star Trek Picard (which will close at third season), and discussed with SFX Magazine’s future of the evergreen series created by Gene Roddenberry: cinema a tv series?

Jonathan Frakes skeptical about Star Trek in the cinema, but there is still room for The Next Generation
Probably Jonathan Frakeswhile loved by fans of Star Trek for his interpretation of William T. Riker in The Next Generationnowadays it is more active as movie director than as an actor: recently for example he signed seven episodes Of Star Trek Discovery and you are of Star Trek Picard (where, however, his Riker has appeared in three). Having in the curriculum, however, also the regia of films for the hall Star Trek – First contact (1996) e Star Trek – Insurrection (1998), is perhaps the best person to ask for information on future of the brand, between cinema and TV. Frakes does not use half measures.
Making movies is tough! Even JJ Abrams couldn’t get this fourth film off the ground (after Star Trek Beyond, ed.). And all those wonderful voices? Noah Hawley had to work on a Star Trek movie, and Quentin (Tarantino) he toyed with people’s feelings about a possible film of his own. If not even those two names could make a c- of a movie, I don’t know who can. It seems to me that TV is the future. (…)
I hope the road leads us to another series. The premises are there, as you will see, when you see the season finale (by Picard, ed). Everything makes me think that the characters of this final season of Picardshould work, are ready for another trip. I feel really optimistic. I believe it could be the curtain for Picard, but I’m not sure if it is for Next Generation. I feel it in the air. I am an eternal optimist. Of course Terry (Matalas) would like that!
