16 of the 20 Oscar nominations this year represent the first nomination for the performers, let’s see who it is.
Among the many records of the nomination garlic Oscar of this year, which are certainly among the most inclusive and representative in history, perhaps the biggest surprise lies in the number of first nominations for actors and actresses: 16 of the chosen ones, out of 20, had never received one. Let’s see them in detail, starting with the ladies.
Nominees for Best Actress
I’m 3 out of 5 interpreters at their first candidacy. In addition to Malay Michelle YeohHong Kong film veteran and first Asian actress to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Oncethe most relevant and unexpected new entry is Andrea Riseborough, a British actress extraordinaire that we’ve been rooting for for a long time. The film for which she is nominated, To Leslieis an independent feature debut, directed by Michael Morris, where she plays an alcoholic woman trying to mend her relationship with her son. There wasn’t much publicity but the film and the actress’s performance were adored by illustrious colleagues such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Jennifer Aniston. Then there is the case of Ana de Armasnominated for her convincing portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in the fictional biopic based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel, Blondewhich despite the film’s controversial reception, was impossible to ignore.
Nominees for Best Supporting Actress
I’m four actresses nominated for the first time this year. Let’s start from Hong Chauborn in Thailand to Vietnamese parents, which we have already seen in Downsizing and which he received his first nomination for The Whale. We continue then with the Irish Kerry Condoncandidate for The spirits of the island. TV viewers will know her as the Stacey Ehrmantraut of Better Call Saul or as Octavia’s Romabut at the cinema, again directed by Martin McDonagh, was in the cast of Three posters in Ebbing, Missouri e you This Must be the Place by Paolo Sorrentino. Also a new candidate was another actress born in Los Angeles but of clear Asian origins, Stephanie Hsuper Everything Everywhere All at Once. She was Soo in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings but has a career mostly in television. We appreciated her in the role of Mei in The wonderful Mrs. Maisel. Strange as it may seem, the veteran closes the quartet Jamie Lee Curtisnever nominated for an Oscar, for her role in the highly acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Nominees for Best Actor
They are all Oscar newbiesstrange as it may seem, the five nominees for best leading actorstarting with two interpreters of proven skill such as Colin Farrell per The spirits of the island and the wonderful Bill Nighyinterpreter of Livingrereading of To live by Akira Kurosawa. Then there is the revived Brendan Fraserwho moved everyone with his role in The Whale. The other two, the American, are younger Austin Butler (age 31) for his portrayal of the king of rock ‘n roll in Elvis and Irish Paul Mescal (27 years old on February 2) for After sun, another independent film. The actor won a BAFTA for Normal People and we have seen it in The dark daughter.
Nominees for Best Supporting Actor
With the exception of Judd HirschHollywood veteran, born in 1935, former candidate in 1981 for Common people and this year for the role of Uncle Boris in The Fablemans di Steven Spielberg, the other four actors are in their first nominationstarting with another veteran, the very good Brendan Gleesonwhich is finally recognized for its contribution to The spirits of the island. For the independent film Causeway African-American is a candidate Brian Tyree HenryAmong his (many) previous credits we mention If the street could talk, The woman at the window, Godzilla vs. Kong, Eternals e Bullet Train and theAtlanta television. As a voice actor he worked for Spider-Man: Into a New Universe and for the sequel. The Irish Barry Keoghan (big attendance for Ireland at these Oscars!) is one of our favorite actors of the younger generation and arrives in his first nomination with The spirits of the island. Orphaned of a mother at the age of 11, raised in various foster families, the now thirty-year-old actor has found his second chance and redemption tool in acting: The sacrifice of the sacred deer, Dunkirk, American Animals, Eternals e The Batman are just some of the films in which we have enjoyed it. Finally, of Ke Huy Quanan American actor of Vietnamese origin, by now everything is known: his is a return to the cinema in a big way, with Everything Everywhere All at Onceafter his performances as a child in I Goonies e Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
