The beautiful film by Park Chan-wook arrives in Italian cinemas on February 2, distributed by Lucky Red also in the original subtitled version, which the 2023 Oscars have culpably excluded from the list of candidates for best international film.
I don’t know if it was a surprise, but certainly for many, and for those who love cinema in its best forms, it was a great disappointment not to see Decision to Leavethe beautiful new film by Park Chan-wookbetween those Oscar nominees 2023 as best international film.
An exclusion that is the umpteenth confirmation, in case there was still a need, that the prizes – be they the Oscars or those awarded by some jury at some festival – are something with a much more than marginal value of artistic and cultural recognition.
Presented at Cannes Film Festival 2022 (where, by the way, he won an award, the one for Best Director), this new work by the master of Korean cinema was one of the best seen on the Croisette, as the review written in Cannes, and is about to debut in Italian cinemas, February 2con Lucky Redwho decided to release it, with intelligence and foresight, not only in its dubbed version, but also in the original version with Italian subtitles.
The cinemas they will show Decision to leave in the original language with subtitles are: Greenwich, Nuovo Aquila and Quattro Fontane of Rome, the Nazionale of Turin, Anteo Palazzo del Cinema and Beltrade of Milan, the Visionario of Udine, Spazio Uno of Florence, Conca Verde of Bergamo, Rosebud of Reggio Emilia , Film Studio of Modena and the Jolly of Piacenza. Here the list of rooms always updated by the distributor.
Lucky Red has therefore decided to also release a trailer of Decision To Leave in vo subtitled, which we show below:
Awarded at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Director, “Decision to leave” is the new film by Park Chan-wook, which after the Trilogy of revenge chooses the path of a refined sentimental thriller.
While investigating the death of a man who mysteriously fell from the mountain, detective Hae Jun meets the elusive Seo-rae, the victim’s young widow, who doesn’t seem to be shocked by the disappearance of her husband and who, for this very reason, immediately becomes the main suspect of the murder. Guilty or innocent? Melancholy and mysterious, the woman manages to arouse the detective’s interest and ignite in him a disruptive passion, which will lead him to endanger her profession.
Far from the tones of the revenge trilogy that made Park Chan-wook known to the whole world, the new film by the South Korean filmmaker is a thriller with a noir touch, which manages to combine the breadth of the great classics with the freshness of contemporary cinema: in many they hailed it as an homage to the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock. A detective story full of twists and turns that intertwines its threads with romantic melodrama, bringing to the big screen a mystery that is both sentimental and action-packed.
