The Oscar nominations 2023 of Everything Everywhere All at Once: the commentary of Andrea Romeo (I Wonder Pictures)

Andrew Romeofounder and managing director of I Wonder Picturescomments:

As known to those who have lived to notice it, chaos has its own order and its own recursive cycles. There are seasons in which the reaffirmation of consolidated values seems to constantly prevail: the new seems to have no space and any risk does not make sense. And then everything changes. The things that are taken for granted now seem inefficient to us, the improbable becomes possible and every new idea is necessary. As if he was expecting nothing else. A crisis changes the cards on the table. A political, cultural, economic upheaval is enough to change the paradigm of the possible. And so it is in cinema. There are films that arrive at the right time. Often little nutshells, independent of the majors, pushed up by a wave that they didn’t generate but that they know how to navigate best.

This is the case of Everything Everywhere All at Once, a product of the independent house A24, which seems to know how to surf the new wave perfectly. Like El Mariachi in my cinephile generation and Easy Rider in my parents’, the Daniels Multiverse has grown week after week at the US Box Office, swelled the ranks of its US and global supporters to surpass 10 million viewers. EEAAO has overwhelmed half the world’s media and social networks with its imagery and now it’s hitting the Oscars like a tsunami. In Italy the film has arrived for the most curious and for those who already knew it in the heat of last October, but now (February 2) it returns to the cinema driven by the Oscar nominations and by the curiosity it has generated in recent months.

EEAAO, I want to say it clearly, is a film with a high propulsion of improbability. If you are among those who have already loved it, I am sure you will want to come back and see it in theaters with friends who you want to experience. If, on the other hand, you are one of those who don’t like to take risks or have thought that it didn’t deserve their attention, consider for once the possibility of doing something unlikely and go to the cinema to see EEAAO. It could change your life or at least your day.

A great success and a challenge won for I Wonder Pictures in collaboration with the Unipol Biografilm Collection, which take the opportunity to bring the film back to Italian cinemas from 2 February.
