Let’s analyze the 2023 Oscar nominations, which sanction the triumph of independent cinema – and of the new generations – and the return to the pure sense of entertainment.
They have just been announced Oscar nominations 2023 and the world of social media has been literally invaded by searches, questions and bets. Many of the favorites have in fact been snubbed, while independent film star and titles apparently far from the tastes of the Academy have instead found their place. Next to usual suspects – Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Michelle Williams, Cate Blanchett – indeed appear large looking for redemption and deserved acknowledgments (never arrived in decades of career) – Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Colin Farrell, Bill Nighy – but also many new names, some of whom audiences have come to know during this unpredictable awards season: Austin Butler, Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Brian Tyree Henry and Ana De Armas. As regards the competing titles, a trend already underway in previous editions has been renewed, which sees almost opposing – but destined to unite – big cinema and independent cinemaoften more protagonist in the Festival circuit than in ceremonies such as that of the Oscar. Oscars 2023 – The 10 titles competing for best film

And it is precisely The Daniels’ film that is the standard-bearer of the “assault” of independent cinema, which, at the same time, brings together the two natures of this edition of the Academy. Jamie Lee Curtis indeed it comes candidate for the first time in his prolific career just for Everything Everywhere All at Once, alongside the other three main performers: Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu and Ke Huy Quan. And it’s always thanks to a blockbuster – Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – which gets its first nomination Angela Bassettbecoming the first interpreter of the MCU to aspire – and probably win – the statuette.
In this complex and varied framework, an expression of a cinema that seeks change but which, at the same time, tries to re-embrace its origins and its essence – or the one linked to the pure sense of the “show” – names once among the favorites, such as that of Damien Chazellethey therefore have to settle for three nominations – Babylon competes for the best costumes, for the set design and the soundtrack – while others, such as that di Alejandro González Iñárritudisappear completely – only nomination a Bardo it’s for photography. After all, to understand the picture of cinema promoted by the Academy, just look at the titles with the highest number of nominations: 11 nomination per Everything Everywhere All at Once, 9 per Nothing new on the western front e The Spirits of the Island – by the now ubiquitous Martin McDonagh – e 7 per The Fabelmans, autobiographical portrait of Steven Spielberg, both homage and swan song of a certain type of cinema. Everything is therefore still possible and the night of the Oscars – which will be held on March 12, 2023 – could definitively upset the cards on the table.
