The two dated for a while, from around 2008 to 2010, and have talked about their relationship back then. Kaley said: ” At first I had a huge crush on Johnny. I didn’t even hide it. He has such a swagger. We were both dating other people at the time, but I only had eyes for Johnny. Then, when I found out he had eyes for me too, I thought, “Oh, that’s going to be trouble.”. Johnny’s reply was not long in coming: “You have to really bludgeon my head to let me know you’re flirting with me. Before Kaley and I started dating, I didn’t have a clue about a crush.”
The actress then pressed: “For all the scenes up until we got together in real life, it was obvious there was always something going on. There was chemistry and we were having crushes on each other. It was like that for the whole first season until we really got together. I was very nervous for both of them (referring to kissing on screen and in real life, ed). I mean, I used to kiss him like Penny before we dated, and it’s weird when you have a crush on someone and you kiss them as an actor.”
Galecki later said, regarding the end of their relationship: “We come from very different worlds, but we also seem to blend into each other’s worlds in a certain way. It was a lot of fun teaching each other different things, but then when I got to wanting different things, that made things more complicated. Obviously I was interested in Russian water documentaries and she wasn’t. I think one of the things that created a chasm between us was my strict privacy policy, whereas Kaley was very, very open about her life. I didn’t feel comfortable going public and I think it hurt Kaley’s feelings a little bit, and I can understand that. It wasn’t because I was ashamed of her or our relationship, but I wanted to protect the public’s acceptance of Penny and Leonard, without distraction from the tabloids. I’m private in general, but that made me particularly uncomfortable because we were working together and the show was growing rapidly. At one point it seemed to me that we were living a lie, because we went to awards and ceremonies and pretended that we weren’t a couple, when in reality we were a couple very much in love.“
The love story between the two has been over for some time, but great professional esteem and above all great affection have remained between Kaley and Johnny.
