The film directorial debut of Nida Manzoor, the author of an already cult series such as We Are Lady Parts, the film tells the story of a girl who is passionate about martial arts who wants to save her sister from a wrong marriage.
Among the films that will be presented during the 2023 edition of the well-known Sundance Film Festival, one of the most important film events of the year which opens today, there will also be an English film that is being talked about a lot. Is titled Polite Societymixes comedy, family and social issues, and martial arts, and marks the feature film directorial debut of Nida Manzoorthe author of a quickly cultish sitcom titled We Are Lady Partssix 25-minute episodes that told the story of a punk band from 1970s London made up exclusively of Muslim women.
This first film of hers, which she obviously also scripted, is instead the story of Ria, an English girl of Pakistani origin who is passionate about martial arts and who dreams of becoming a stunt woman. Ria is opposed by her family but finds support and complicity in her older sister Lena, with her artistic temperament. However, when Lena seems to be going through a period of crisis, and accepting the engagement to the son of a very snobbish mother’s friend, Ria becomes convinced that behind the marriage request there is a mysterious but certainly evil plan, and that it is her job to save her the wedding, with the help of two not too convinced friends.
In the cast of the film, which who knows if some distributors will want to bring to Italy after the Sundance showcase, there are Priya Kansara, Ritu Arya, Nimra Bucha, Akshay Khanna, Seraphina Beh and Ella Bruccoleri.
