The Good Mothers. After the debut of The ignorant fairies – The series and the announced return of Boris with the fourth revival season, Disney+ begins to reveal the first details on its third original Italian TV series (the fourth if we count The Knights of Castelcorvo). Lo show tells the story of the ‘Ndrangheta seen entirely from the point of view of the women who dared to challenge it.

The Good Mothers is a choral and multifaceted work that tells the true story of three women, who grew up within the fiercest and richest clans of the ‘Ndrangheta, who decide to collaborate with a courageous magistrate who is working to destroy it. They will therefore have to fight against their own families for the right to survive and to build a new future for themselves and their children.
Quando esce The Good Mothers
Filming kicked off last spring, and took place between Milan, Rome and Calabria. The release of the TV series will take place during 2023 exclusively on Disney +. The original Italian Disney+ show will be in competition in the “Berlinale Series” section at the 73rd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. The series is a candidate for the “Berlinale Series Award”, an award established this year and the first dedicated to seriality in the history of the Festival.

The series stars Gaia Girace (The brilliant friend) as Denise Cosco, Valentina Belle (Catch-22, I Wanted to Be a Rockstar, The Doctors) as Giuseppina Pesce, Barbara Chichiarelli (Suburra – The series, Favolacce) in those of Anna Colace, Francis Colella (ZeroZeroZero, Trust) in those of Carlo Cosco, Simona Distefano (The Traitor) in the role of Concetta Cacciola, Andrew Dodero (Do not hate) in that of Carmine and with Micaela Ramazzotti (The mad joy, the first beautiful thing) as Lea Garofalo.
What is The Good Mothers about, plot of the tv series
At the center of the TV series is a young and brilliant prosecutor, Anna Colace, who has the intuition to attack the ‘Ndrangheta by relying on its women, the wives and mothers of the bosses. Figures that have always been marginalized with oppression and violence by the extremely patriarchal system of the criminal organization. The story begins with the famous disappearance of Lea Garofalo, who had testified against her husband Carlo Cosco to escape her grip and ensure her daughter Denise of her a life away from that environment. The story expands, through the investigations of the prosecutor Anna Colace, to the powerful stories of Giuseppina Pesce and Concetta Cacciola. Two very different women but linked by a dramatic past, by a life lived in an oppressive and suffocating context and by the desire to guarantee themselves and their children a better future, as Lea had tried to do.

Six episodes of 60 minutes each make up the first season of The Good Mothers. The series is produced by Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross for House Productions (Brexit: The Uncivil War) and by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa for Wildside (My brilliant friend, Anna) a Fremantle group company.

Based on the Foreign Press Association award-winning bestseller of the same name by journalist Alex Perry and written by Stephen Butchard (Bagdad Central, The Last Kingdom), BAFTA winner, the project is directed by Julian Jarrold (The Crown, Becoming Jane and an Emmy nomination for The Girl) and Elisa Amoruso (Cursed Spring, Chiara Ferragni: Unposted).
