Taken from the bestseller “The Man Who Put the World in Order” of the writer Fredrik Backmanas well as a remake of the Swedish film Mr. Ove which was the first film adaptation of it, the film offers the possibility to Tom Hanks to play a different character for him than usual.
At the heart of the story of Not That Close there is Otto Anderson, a grumpy widower, very rigid and respectful of his habits. One day a lively young family moves into the house next door to him. The meeting with Marisol, a brilliant and pregnant girl, creates an unlikely friendship that begins to crack the glass case in which Otto has decided to live.
Tom Hanks: “When I see a movie, I always wonder what I would do. I also wondered when I saw Iron Man”
Directed by the director Marc Forsterthe film is co-produced by the same Tom Hanks together with his wife Rita Wilson. The actor shared an amusing backstory when the couple decided to do an American version of the story.
“What did Rita tell you… do you know who would be perfect for the part of Otto? George Clooney. Did that happen?” asks the speaker of the SiriusXM radio station. This is the answer of Tom Hanks:
He said exactly that. Then I slept a week and a half on the sofa, of my own free will. We watched the film together (the original Swedish version, ed) and I watched it with a bit of cynicism and a competitive spirit. That actor had the chance to do this role. It’s a big role. I wonder what I would do… It’s something I always ask myself “what would I do”. When I saw the Iron Man movies, I asked myself “what would I do if I played Iron Man”.
