Disappointment is that feeling of bitterness of those who see that reality does not correspond to their hopes. Consciously or unknowingly, we tend to mentally anticipate what could be and therefore we get emotionally charged, and the more time passes and we get closer to the event, the more the tension rises. And zac! The moment arrives, but it does not live up to expectations. Too many, too many times it happened with highly anticipated scenes from TV series. A case in point is Game of Thrones, which charged us like a spring for eight seasons and then launched us straight into burning disappointment. But it is not the only one to have disappointed us.
1) Death of the Night King (Game of Thrones)
The eighth season of Game of Thrones has divided the fans. Many hated it, some found it strangely consistent with the turn it had taken. But on one thing they all agree: the death of the Night King was a total disappointment. It is from the fourth season that this being is introduced, forged by the Children of the Forest who made him powerful, icy, immortal. It is he who controls the army of the undead, it is he who constitutes the scary antagonist of Game of Thrones. He seemed unbeatable, a superhuman being with the power of life and death and with the purpose of annihilating existence itself. We fantasized about its end, how and who would have killed him and we gave ourselves to the most disparate theories. But we only built castles in the air.
Ultimately, it is Arya Stark who impales him in the battle of Winterfell with her Valyrian steel dagger, thereby causing the complete destruction of the army of the dead. The Night King dies in a banal way, like a normal human being. And our disappointment skyrockets.
2) The kiss between Maeve and Otis (Sex Education)
We have been waiting for it for three seasons. For three seasons we have patiently waited for Maeve and Otis to be ready to declare themselves to each other. But whenever they finally seem to be on the verge of kissing, forgiving each other and being together, something or someone got in the way. Season 3 gave us that moment we craved so much, in that God-forgotten gas station. But the truth is, when they kissed, we were disappointed.
That kiss came too late. Probably the authors did not expect the couple Otis-Ruby it would have been as successful as Otis-Maeve and they certainly did not imagine that it would be the first to be the true protagonist of the new season, completely eclipsing the most historic one. But we waited too long and too much is good: difficulties upon difficulties, misunderstandings, bad timing. At a certain point we came out exhausted and to console us here is Ruby, a breath of fresh air compared to the slightly stale push and pull of the two protagonists.
3) The arrival of the Sparrow Academy (The Umbrella Academy)
The second season of The Umbrella Academy ends with an anticipation: the promise of the arrival of superheroes from the Sparrow Academy. Curiosity has only increased in anticipation of the third season, also because the inclusion of these new characters is equivalent to an attempt to break away from the original paper work, since the Sparrow Academy is barely mentioned in the comics of Way. But the problem is that their arrival has disappointed everyone a bit, like the season itself.
The feeling you get is of pure confusion. We don’t even have time to get acquainted with these bizarre characters from the new academy that we already mourn their death, but everything happens with such speed that not even the characters themselves seem particularly touched by their departure. The problem was this, a bit like it happened in Game of Thrones: we were expecting something that came, but it came too fast, closing the chapter with extreme banality.
4) The kiss between Anne and Gilbert (Anne with an E)
Call me Anna (Anne with an E in English) has literally enchanted us for three seasons and we wished that in reality the series did not have such a premature conclusion (Maybe it’s not the end – The first episode after the last episode). One of the cornerstones of the series is the love story between the protagonist and her classmate Gilbert. We follow the evolution of their relationship that passes from a rivalry and competition between school desks to an increasingly sincere friendship, which actually hides much deeper feelings. But how long did we have to wait to finally see the two protagonists declare themselves to each other and thus exchange the first (and only) kiss?
We have been looking forward to this scene for three seasons. And when it came it just didn’t feel right anymore. THEthe moment had passed and this kiss seemed almost an involution of their relationship, it was not in step with their history, as if it had diminished it.
5) The meeting between Sherlock and Eurus (Sherlock)
We are now convinced that the only way to give Sherlock a worthy ending is through a movie. Season 4 ultimately turns out to be the key to solving the biggest puzzle we never thought could be cleared up: Sherlock Holmes. And the solution is hidden within the walls of a maximum security prison. Eurusthe younger sister of the famous investigator, would seem to be not only the mastermind behind the cases that arise in front of the protagonist and his friend during the last season, but above all the origin of the problems that grip the protagonist’s mind.
Surely it was fascinating to discover the truth about the Holmes’ past, who Barbarossa really was, what Eurus had done to him and why Sherlock completely removed his sister’s existence, closing the truth behind a never opened door of his mental palace. But the whole thing was too hasty. We have not had the opportunity to metabolize or deepen the relationship between the two brothers. From this ending and their meeting we would have expected much more.
6) The declaration between Stiles and Lydia (Teen Wolf)
Even before Jeff Davis had concretely evaluated the possibility of a love story between Stiles and Lydia, we had already created Stydia, contenting ourselves with fanfiction in the golden years in which these proliferated to make up for the lack of romantic moments between the two. throughout the series. True, we had a kiss in the third season, but then nothing more until the first part of the sixth. And at that point Jeff Davis had to get a move on, because the series was ending and there was still nothing between the two.
So the place there: at the end of the first episode of the sixth season Stiles utters the fateful phrase “Remember I love you”, just before disappearing, captured by the Wild Hunt. Not to belittle the moment or their story of personal growth and evolution, but the truth is that the emotional crescendo stopped after the third season. And this sudden peak came without an adequate climax, without loading the blow, ending up passing quietly.
7) The resurrection of Cyrus (Gomorrah)
True we are talking about Ciro the Immortalas the film had already announced, he would return from the land of the dead. We looked forward to his return and above all we waited for an explanation on how he managed to save himself. But it never came. His resurrection has been liquidated with scientific sources testifying that a man shot in the chest and thrown overboard can actually survive. But how? His rescue immediately went into the background, while Ciro was ready on his return after hiding in Bulgaria.
But even when we returned to Naples we could not help but turn up our noses. Gennyhis best friend forced to shoot him, has been kept in the dark and when he sees what he was like a blood brother he does not react as we would have expected. They come together to start a fratricidal war, a feud we didn’t want to see. Cyrus returned completely alone, and in a very short time he managed to build a small resistance such as to ruinously dethrone the new king. It was just too sudden.
