Art imitated life in a big way for Elliot Page by The Umbrella Academy.
Eighteen months after she came out as a transgender, the character of Elliot Page did the same when The Umbrella Academy released its third season.
The creator of the series Steve Blackman recently told that after the conclusion of the scripts, when he called to share the news of his transition, and Blackman felt it was “very important” that both of them collaborate on how to incorporate that transition into Viktor in scripts already written. The first call of Blackman was a Nick Adamsvice president of the GLAAD Media Institute, which put him in contact with the transgender writer and boxer Thomas Page McBee. With him guiding him through the writing process, Blackman claims to have “learned a lot more” about dealing with Viktor’s gender identity:
“We wanted it not to be the central story of the season. We wanted it to be a story, or a part of the story.”
As he explained McBeewriting Viktor’s transition represented “an opportunity to show an organic and fundamental transition for the character, which could only work in synergy with the existing character arcs, without eclipsing them.”
Equally crucial was Viktor’s brothers’ reaction to the news. While there is a learning curve for some of the Hargreeves, the family is totally supportive from the start, which they do Blackman considered essential for the season:
“We wanted to tell a story that was genuinely pro-trans, authentic and sensitive, and show that families can accept these people in their lives and that it doesn’t have to be a bad thing, as is often portrayed in the media. This was crucial. . I talked to Elliot and Thomas throughout the shoot, and I’m really proud of how we did it. “
