Sharon Stone shares details of the Barbie movie she proposed in the '90s.
Before Greta Gerwig directed the first Barbie movie, breaking all records and grossing an incredible sum at the box office, in the 90s Sharon Stone was involved in a project, never realized, about the iconic Mattel doll. In a recent appearance on the Fly on the Wall podcast, Stone shared details of what that film would have been like.

“In the '90s I went into the studio to try to make Barbie with a producer, a friend of mine, and I had the then CEO of Mattel on my side. They threw us out of the studio. They said, 'Why are you taking this American icon and trying to destroy it? What's wrong with you?. They gave me a lecture and showed me to the door“, said the actress.
Stone also recounted some details of the project at the time: “We planned for the opening scene to be Barbie arriving at Mattel in her Barbie car, and then the Secret Service pops out and their feet are as big as the car.“.
“They escort her inside Mattel and everyone steps aside because she is the most important member of Mattel. All the important people run after her and kiss her ass because she's the queen of Mattel, and it's about the power of being Barbie and what Barbie could do in the world because she's so powerful“, continued the actress. Stone specified that executives at the time “they didn't think Barbie should be powerful“ and noted that those executives are no longer with the company.
Earlier this year, the Basic Instinct actress responded to a post from America Ferrera in which she shared her acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Awards after winning Best Actress for the recent Barbie. “I was laughed at by the studio when I proposed the idea of Barbie in the 90s with the support of Barbie's boss. How far we have come thank you sir for your courage and resistance“, commented Stone. Greta Gerwig directed the Oscar-nominated film with Margot Robbie in the role of the main character.
